What is Thermal Runaway & How To Prevent It

Thermal Materials

Thermal runaway occurs when a component produces more heat than it releases. This cycle leads to continuously increasing temperatures and eventually degrades both the object itself and, potentially, components in close proximity. Any electrical component that generates heat is at risk of experiencing thermal runaway.

Batteries (like those found in gas and electric vehicles, among other applications) are particularly susceptible to thermal runaway, but so are motors, sensors, valves, chips, and lights. Properly addressing thermal runaway in all these parts and components is critical because, if left unchecked, it can lead to dangerously high temperatures, fire, and even shrapnel expulsion.

Dissipate Heat Before It Becomes a Problem

The key to avoiding thermal runaway is preparation. Thermal management products, like those offered by Sur-Seal, can mitigate the risk of overheating and its hazardous consequences. By dissipating heat – which, in turn, cools components – the temperature integrity of an electrical device can be preserved.

When it comes to dissipating heat, the two most effective solutions are thermal pads and thermal tape. You can also use thermal paste, but it has its challenges. Sur-Seal manufactures its own line of pads and tape, providing longer-lasting protection than grease. Either choice offers its benefits, so it’s essential to assess a situation first and then determine the most appropriate.

Choose the Right Thermal Runaway Fix

Like all thermal management solutions, thermal pads fill holes and enhance heat transfer. The soft texture of the pads allows them to expand in a manner that covers as many gaps as possible (a process known as “wet-out”), while their construction means they’re less likely than other solutions, such as thermal grease, to degrade over time. Additionally, the variety of materials in which they come makes them a versatile choice that can be applied to most kinds of components. Thermal pads are an especially good option for continuous-use electronics due to their longevity.

Like thermal pads, thermal tape creates a solid barrier that prevents heat accumulation. Due to its adhesive properties, it can also assist in mounting. It typically costs slightly more than grease but lasts longer, like pads. Thermal tape tends to be less effective than pads for cooling very hot components, making it best for lighting and other lower-temperature applications.
